How would you prepare for an emergency? |
2. Set a reminder in your phone or make a note on your calendar to check your smoke alarm once a month.
3. Write down important phone numbers on paper such as the number to report a power cut (105) and the numbers of anyone you might want to contact in an emergency.
4. Talk to your children about how and when to call 999 and what they should do if there’s an emergency, such as a fire at home.
5. Check your long term flood risk and sign up for flood and weather warnings.
STORM/FLOOD ADVICE - NDC HIGHWAYS NOTICE:
You can keep up to date with Met Office weather warnings on their website here: UK weather warnings - Met Office
Advice for preparation in your communities that you’re able to undertake safely in readiness for future high wind speeds and extra rainfall. This may include:
- Removing leaves from gullies to facilitate drainage,
- Checking and fixing down items that may be susceptible to displacement by wind,
- Being aware of and circulating our following standard safety messages:
- Be alert to fallen trees and branches, particularly on minor roads where they may not have been reported;
- Consider if your journey is essential and be alert to weather warnings;
- Allow additional time for your journey, never drive through floodwater or swollen flowing water, you don’t know how deep it is. Find an alternative route;
- Reduce your speed and leave more space between you and the vehicle in front and leave plenty of room if you’re overtaking;
- Drive with care and according to the conditions.
- Listen to local radio for updates on current weather conditions
