Welcome to the 100th Chittlehamholt, Warkleigh and Satterleigh Summer Show, the first of which was held in 1919 and war and global pandemic aside, has been an annual event ever since.

Some things have changed; we no longer have a clay pigeon shoot, 6-a-side football competition or a dance in the Village Hall in the evening after the show. We now have a section for photography (since 2003) and our very popular dog show.

Some things have remained the same, Class 1 has been 5 round white potatoes since the first show.

This year we have some fun ‘Heritage’ classes which reflect the history of the show.

Please continue to support us by entering classes, we are looking forward to the next 100 years!

225g soft unsalted butter       grated zest of 1/2 an orange

225g caster sugar                     300g self raising flour

4 medium eggs beaten            2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp vanilla extract                 3 tbsp milk

For the topping

300g icing sugar

A few drops of pink food colouring

Approx 4 tbsp water

2 tbsp desiccated coconut

Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C gas 4. Grease and line a 30 × 20cm traybake tin.

Cream together the butter and sugar, until light and fluffy.

Slowly mix in the eggs, a little at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract, followed by the orange zest. Fold in the flour and baking powder, then stir in the milk so the mix is a little looser. Add a splash more milk if it seems very stiff.

Transfer the mixture to the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown and springy to the touch. Leave to cool in the tin before carefully removing.

Combine the icing sugar, food colouring and water until you have a thick, smooth icing. Spoon over the cake, and smooth over using a palette knife. Scatter with the coconut and slice into squares once set.

Finely grated rind of 1 lemon

Preheat the oven to 180/160 Fan, 350F, Gas 4

Line or grease and base line a 900g/2lb loaf tin.

Measure all the ingredients for the cake into a large bowl and beat well for about 2 minutes until smooth and well blended.  Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface.

Bake in the pre-heated oven for about 35-40 minutes or until the cake has shrunk slightly from the sides of the tin and springs back when lightly pressed with a finger.

Whilst the cake is baking, prepare the topping by stirring the lemon juice and sugar in a bowl until well mixed.  When the cake comes out of the oven, spread the lemon paste over the top whilst the cake is still hot.  Leave the cake in the tin until cold, then turn out and remove paper.
