May is pretty, May is mild, Dances like a happy child; Sing out, robin; spring out, flowers; April went with all her showers, And the world is green again; so wrote Annette Wynne in her poem May Is Pretty, May Is Mild. Let’s hope she was right.

COMMUNITY SHOP

We look forward to May, with better weather and, with two Bank Holidays, an increase in visitors. The activity on the shop extension continues, now working with Building Control to confirm their requirements prior to final quotes being produced and the Public Open Space funding application being prepared, onwards and upwards! As ever, many thanks to all our customers for continuing to support the Shop and thanks to our team of volunteers for making it all work so well. Our committee secretary and one of our long-term volunteers have both recently retired so we are looking for replacements for both positions (thanks to Malcolm Palin and Paul Sopp for their years of sterling service).

If anyone would like to join our team, then please contact a committee member or drop an email to shop@chittlehamholtshop.co.uk

CHITTLEHAMHOLT GARDEN CLUB

On a warm evening on 18th April, 18 members of the Gardening Club visited Ash Moor Nursery, Rose Ash, for a demonstration on how to make hanging baskets. Jenny, the proprietor, gave a presentation which made it all look so easy and included tips about using water-retaining granules and slow-release fertiliser baubles and to keep baskets, if made up now, in a greenhouse or poly tunnel or sheltered spot, until the weather improves. After being served tea and coffee with a generous selection of home-made cakes, we were able to buy plants from the interesting and unusual stock which Jenny offers. Our next visit is to Kia-Ora Farm & Gardens, Knowle Lane, Cullompton EX15 1PZ on May 9th. Entry including teas £10. No dogs.

WARKLEIGH, SATTERLEIGH AND CHITTLEHAMHOLT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
Hopefully by now the rain will have eased and the ground warmed up and we can all get busy in the garden sowing and planting. After the Gardening Club visit to Ash Moor Nursery for a hanging basket demonstration, we hope to see lots of entries in class 53 'A hanging basket display, any size'. There are some new classes in the dog show this year, including best trick (time to start practising!) and best young handler.

A gentle reminder to last year's winners; if you haven't had your cup engraved, please do so as soon as possible as cups need to be returned to the committee at the beginning of July. Thank You. Show day Saturday 27th July. OPEN GARDEN –

NEWLANDS FARM
All money raised will go to South Molton Town Band. Come along and enjoy a cream tea in the peace and tranquillity of our garden, or pop along during the evening for some cheese and wine when the garden is lit up. 29th & 30th June 2024: 11am to 4pm 29th June: Night Garden 7.30pm to 10.30pm For further information contact Jayne on 01769 540354 or 07815 826166.

Coffee mornings in the hall
During the coffee morning on Wednesday 8th May, the Committee are pleased to announce that we shall also be hosting a pop-up shopping experience with Vanilla Black Label which is being offered by Barbara Miers. Barbara sells a wide variety of clothing and accessories at very reasonable prices. Many of you may remember that she had a very successful shop in South Molton called Vanilla a few years ago. Barbara has kindly agreed to donate 10% of her takings to the Village Hall. She will be available from 10am to 4pm and looks forward to meeting old friends and making new ones. Big thanks to our volunteers who organise the coffee mornings.

Pilates in the hall
The village hall committee are pleased to confirm that we are now hosting Pilates in the hall. Classes will be held every Thursday morning at 10:00 am during school term times. All abilities welcome. For more information anyone interested should contact Sarah Morris on 07875 569517.

Grand re-opening of the hall
Following extensive works in and around the hall over recent months, the hall committee are pleased to announce that we will be hosting a grand reopening cream tea event on Saturday 1st June 3:00-4:30 pm. Come along, inspect the works, talk to committee members about what it means for the hall and its running costs and grab a free cream tea in the process. We will be inviting various representatives from the organisations that have helped fund the works too, as well as seeking many photo opportunities to help publicise the completion of the works.

Don't forget the coffee morning and the craft group!

Coffee Morning in the Village Hall
10 a.m - 12p.m in Village Hall every 2nd Wednesday of the month. Coffee, tea, cakes, pastries - and a chance to have a chat and a laugh. Do join us!
